Jacari is a student charity providing home tutoring for disadvantaged children aged 6-16 who don’t speak English as their first language. Students spend an hour a week helping a child with their English language. This has been proven to result in improved performance at school and an increase in the child’s confidence outside the classroom.
We also run Mothers’ Classes, for mothers of our Jacari pupils to access English language support. To find out more, visit our Mothers’ Classes page.
I’m a student. Why should I volunteer?
By volunteering you will:
- Build a lasting relationship with your pupil and their family
- Experience Oxford outside the University bubble
- Make a tangible difference to a child’s life
As the oldest student charity of Oxford University we have an established support system that provides training sessions, teaching materials and individual support. No teaching experience or foreign language knowledge is required, the hours are flexible, and it looks great on a CV.
