Fundraise

Help Jacari provide free tutoring to young refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants in Bristol and Oxford by fundraising for our small charity

Why fundraise

We are a small charity and rely entirely on fundraising to run our programmes. While we get some of our funding from grants from trusts and foundations and the National Lottery, we also rely on the generosity of our supporters to help us to make a difference to refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant children and their families in Bristol and Oxford.

We have low overheads and the majority of funding goes towards paying our small staff team so we can recruit, train and support volunteers and work with our school partners to match them to young people who need tutoring to help them gain English language skills.

Fundraising ideas

Run, bake, cycle, quiz, walk, sell your stuff, get muddy - there are so many ways to raise money
Enter an event

There are lots of organised events across the UK which you can enter and then fundraise for Jacari. From fun runs to triathlons, 5ks to marathons, there is so much choice. If you like to push yourself to the extreme, why not enter an endurance race or muddy obstacle course?

Organise your own fundraiser
  • Do a daily exercise challenge for a month - set a target number of squats, burpees, planks or whatever moves you like and get sponsored to do them every day
  • Organise a sponsored walk - do laps of a favourite park or follow a way-marked trail.
  • Set yourself a target of walking a certain number of miles in a period of time.
  • Get baking with friends and hold a cake sale to raise money for Jacari. Find a venue where you can sell your goodies - your workplace, student halls, church or community centre.
  • Get together with friends and run an old-fashioned jumble sale and get rid of unwanted clothes, jewellery, ornaments, home accessories.
  • Organise a quiz - ask everyone to donate to take part and either write your own quiz or download one.
  • Run a games night where everyone donates to play board games or take part in an online gaming night.
  • Organise a charity supper club - cook a meal, either yourself or with friends, and invite guests who will make a donation to Jacari to enjoy your delicious food! (our Bristol volunteer did just this, raising £50 for Jacari!)
  • Have a karaoke night - get friends together, rent a karaoke machine and charge an entry fee. Our Oxford student committee raised over £100 doing this in 2023!
  • Run a class in something you are good at - one of our supporters raised £200 by running a breakdance workshop!

How to fundraise

Start planning well in advance of your event so you have plenty of time to fundraise and reach your target. If you are doing an organised event, register for the event as soon as possible to ensure you get a place. If you are planning your own event, you'll need to set a date and book the venue.

Collecting donations

There are lots of ways to collect donations. Just Giving is a popular choice for those taking part in fundraising events. Go to Jacari's fundraising page and click on the "Fundraise for Us" button.

If you are collecting money from a bake sale or quiz, you could take cash, pay it into your bank account and then transfer the total amount to Jacari. Please contact us to request bank details.

Promoting your fundraiser

Tell everyone what you are doing and that you are doing it for a fantastic cause that needs their support. Approach friends and family individually for donations - no matter how small, it all adds up and can help get some momentum going on your fundraising page.

Top tip: ask a friend or relative to be the first person to donate a high amount on your sponsorship page, as this sets a trend for others to follow with similar amounts.

Social media is a great tool for raising the profile of your fundraising event, and should help you reach even more donors. Make sure you tag @jacaricharity in your posts and put a link to your fundraising page. We recommend you post regularly in the run up to your event.

On the day

On the day, we encourage you to wear one of our Jacari T-shirts to help further publicise our cause - just let us know what size you need and we'll get one organised for you. Get someone to take some photos of you doing your fundraiser so we can share them on social media.

Support

We are here to support you with your fundraiser and help you raise as much as possible! Please let us know about your fundraising event by emailing us on fundraising@jacari.org.

Share photos with us of you preparing for your fundraiser and of the actual event - we love sharing these on our social media and it may lead to more donations!
