Set up a regular donation today and you could champion a child's education, helping them to increase their confidence and language skills so they can access an education.
Regular donations are particularly important to small charities like Jacari so we can plan ahead and provide long-term tuition to children with EAL in Bristol and Oxford.
Refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant children are arriving in the UK and going straight into our schools with little or no English. They struggle to settle-in, understand their teachers or take part in lessons. They also can’t make friends easily or develop their social skills. Many of these young people have fled conflict and experienced trauma. Having a stable school-life is vital, somewhere they can feel secure and valued and have some sense of normality. But they need to quickly learn English language skills to access this.
By donating to Jacari, you’ll be helping us match these children with a volunteer, who will visit them every week during term-time, providing them with fun, informal tutoring, playing games and building their confidence. Most of our tutors are university and sixth form students and become an important role model for their pupil, a trusted young person who they feel comfortable with, providing regular support and making learning fun.
Your donations will also help us organise fun trips and activities for the children and their families so they can practise their English in a relaxed setting, do something fun together and visit local attractions they may not otherwise have access to.
As a small charity we rely entirely on fundraising over £150,000 every year. The majority of our funding comes from grants from trusts and foundations and the National Lottery, however we increasingly need donations from our supporters to ensure we raise enough to support children and young people facing educational disadvantage.
Every donation, whatever the amount, directly helps Jacari support children and young people from refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant communities by improving their confidence and English language skills. Use our secure donation form to set up a regular or one-off donation to Jacari. If you are a UK tax-payer, you can also opt to add Gift Aid, so Jacari will receive an extra 25p for every £1 donated. If you prefer to donate using a bank transfer, please contact us for our details.
Every time you shop online at one of thousands of retailers, including high street shops, insurance and travel sites, you could be making a donation to Jacari — and it won’t cost you a penny extra!

Be part of creating a better future for young people who use English as an additional language (EAL). After taking care of your friends and family, a gift of any size to Jacari will make a difference to helping young people with EAL fulfil their potential. Your donations will be used towards the costs of running Jacari. We are a small charity and have low overheads so the majority of our funding goes towards paying our small staff team who deliver our work. For a complete breakdown of our most recent expenditure, please consult our full accounts on the Charity Commission website.
It costs around £150,000 a year to run Jacari. We pride ourselves on having low overheads and our main expense is paying the salaries of our small staff team who coordinate our programmes, recruit, train and support over 250 volunteers and manage our key partnerships with schools. We rent space in shared charity offices and have administration costs including insurance, accounting fees and the cost of a database. We pay for DBS checks for all volunteers, volunteer travel expenses, teaching resources, trips and activities for the young people we support and publicity to recruit more volunteers.
Jacari relies on a range of funding sources including grants from trusts and foundations; lottery funding; corporate donations and awards; donations from supporters. Our volunteers and supporters also regularly take part in fundraising events to raise money for Jacari.
You can donate to the charity through our website by clicking the 'Donate' button and following the instructions. If you would prefer to donate via a bank transfer or standing order, please contact us and we will send you our bank details.
